Motion Flashcards
Things to note in motion
*Position and displacement
*Average speed and velocity
*
Displacement and position
*Displacement is the difference between the initial and final positions of a body
*While distance/position is the distance of the body from the origin
*Displacement can have negative value since it is a vector quantity
*While distance can’t be negative; not a vector
*Displacement can only be measured when a body move
*While position/distance can always be measured even if the body doesn’t move
Average speed
*It is the ratio of the total distance travelled to the total time taken
*Is a vector
*Unit is in m/s
Average Velocity
*is a vector
*Has unit of m/s
Is the ratio of change in displacement to change in time
Instantaneous Speed
*Is the speed at an instant of time; as ∆t approaches zero
*Gotten by differentiating the distance with respect to time
