Motion Flashcards
Define speed
Measure of how much distance is travelled in a set amount of time. Speed= distance/time
Define velocity
A measure of speed with a direction- e.g. of a vector.
Formula to find distance
distance= time X speed
Formula to find time
time= distance/speed
1 kilojoules (KJ)= ? J
1000 joules (J)
Prefix table
centi (c)= 1/100
milli (m)= 1/1000
kilo (k)= X 1000
mega (M)= X 1000000
giga (G)= X 1000000000
Name the device used to measure very small distances
Micrometer screw gauge
Name the standard units for speed, distance and time
speed= m/s
distance= meters (m)
time= seconds (s)
If you walk 50m front and then 100m backwards, what is your -
1. total displacement?
2. total distance?
displacement= 50m front= +50
100m back= -100
= +50-100= -50m
Distance= 50+100= 150m
formula for average speed and velocity
avg. speed= total distance/total time (in any direction)
avg. velocity= total distance/total time (in any direction)
Define acceleration
Acceleration is when the speed of an object increases.
How quickly the speed changes in a given time.
Define deceleration
When the speed of an object decreases
Formula for acceleration
acceleration= change in velocity/time taken
Rocket orange takes 4 seconds to go from 0-12m/s and rocket pink takes 2 seconds to go from 0-8m/s. Which rocket accelerates faster?
Rocket orange= a=v/t
= 12-0/4= 12/4= 3m/s
Rocket pink= a=v/t
= 8-0/2= 8/2= 4m/s
Hence, rocket pink accelerates faster.
