Motility Of The Gut Flashcards
What are the layers of the muscle in the gut? What nervous system is in the gut?
- Inner circular
- Outer longitudinal
Enteric nervous system
How does the gut contract using these muscle?
Peristalsis
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system in the control of the gut?
Parasympathetic ( rest and digest) - switches on
Sympathetic (fight or flight) - generally switches off
What enteric nervous system?
A division of the autonomic nervous system.
It’s a mesh like system of neurons that controls the function of the Gi tract
What is a hormone?
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells and organs
What are the two parts of the brain that control vomiting?
- Chemoreceptors trigger zone (CTZ)- detects circulating toxins
- Vomiting centre - recieved input from CTZ and from Gi tract and coordinates the vomiting reflex
What is vomiting?
The force of expelling vomiting using the diaphragm and abdominals wall muscles that contract.
