Motif Rhythmic Variation Flashcards
Identify and Understand Rhythmic Variations in Motifs
Augmentation
-Stretch out a motif to sound out longer by one of two ways:
- Decrease the tempo
- Increase every note length by the same ratio
Diminution
-Compress the motif to sound shorter by one of two ways:
- Increase the tempo
- Decrease every note length by the same ratio
Additive Transformation
-Specific notes are lengthened only
-Instead of lengthening the entire motif, you only lengthen specific notes
Subtractive Transformation
-Specific notes are shortened only
-Instead of compressing the entire motif, you shorten specific notes
Metric Displacement
-Displace the starting point of the motif to change the personality
-Naturally occurring accents of the meter color where the accents of the motif are heard
-Recall:
- Beats 1 and 3 are strong
- Beat 2 and 4 are weak
Time Signature Change
-Changing the time signature of the motif from 4/4 to 3/4
Straight Accentuation
-Adding more emphasis to naturally occurring notes on the strong beats
-Maintains the regular interval
Syncopated Accentuation
-Adding emphasis to naturally occurring weak beats
-Maintains the regular interval
Irregular Accentuation
-Adding emphasis at an irregular interval
-Produces more “chaos”
-Example is adding emphasis to beat 1 and 4
