What is a motif?
A motif is a movement or phrase of movements that embodies the style and content of a dance. It can be manipulated and developed in many different ways. A motif generally consists of actions and has a dynamic quality and spatial design.

Why are motifs important
- Essential ingredients that can be repeated, that gets varied and developed to help structure and organise a dance
- They are helpful for the audience so they can process what they see

- plié in parallel with arms reaching forward
- walks with heels leading and clear changes of direction
- dancers travelling in a line
- dynamic jumps in which the arms circle
- small triplet steps
How is it different to develop a group than a solo
- In a group you have more opportunities to to vary the body, actions, dynamics and space between dancers
- You can also develop the relationship in time, space and number
