Motherboards Flashcards
Overview of motherboard types, expansion slots and bus speeds, RAM slots, CPU sockets, chipsets, jumpers and connectors.
What are the common motherboard types covered by A+?
ATX, Micro-ATX, ITX, Mini-ITX, Nano-ITX, Pico-ITX
What power connectors are typically present on motherboards?
Most modern motherboards have a 24 pin power connector (sometimes 20 pin on older systems). They may also require an additional 4 or 8 pin connector.
What is the largest motherboard type, typically with the most expansion slots?
ATX
What is the smallest and typically lowest power motherboard type, with the smallest form factor?
Pico-ITX
What is an expansion bus?
An expansion bus is a computer bus that sends information between internal hardware (CPU and RAM) and peripheral devices (PCI, PCIe, SATA, etc).
How is bus speed measured?
Bus’s are measured in clock speed. Bus speed, or bandwidth, refers to how much traffic can fit through a connection. Bus speed is measured by the number of cycles it can perform in a single second. One million cycles per second would be a megahertz, or MHz for short.
