Motherboard system components- chipsets Flashcards
what is a chipset?
a collection of cips that perform peripheral and interface functions for the processor
what does it generally decide?
how a mb communicates with peripherals
why do chipsets have a model and number?
to show what type of ram it supports for example
what can chipsets be made off?
one several integrated circuits, (intel uses two)
why should we check the manufacturers website?
sometimes the cooling systems like heat sink and fan block the info
what are chipsets divided into?
northbridge and south bridge
what is the nb most important function?
management of high speed peripheral communication
what is nb primarily responsible for?
communications with integrated video using pice and comms between cpu and ram
communication between cpu and ram are over?
Front side bus (fsb)
what is between the cpu and nb?
fsb
what is between nb and ram?
memory bus
If there is a back side bus (bsb) what does it connect to?
cache
what if there is no bsb?
the cache is placed on the fsb
what is the nb directly connected with and what does it help with?
southbirdge and helps manage comms between sb and rest of computer
what is sb responisble for?
providing support to slower onboard peripharls e.g ps/2 and rest of computer
