What is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, often the kidneys.
When does preeclampsia often begin?
Usually we see this after 20 weeks of pregnancy in a woman whose blood pressure has been normal.
What blood pressure is considered preeclampic?
Blood pressure 140/90 documented on 2 occasions at least 4 hours apart
Name 5 signs and symptoms of preeclampsia?
- excess protein in urine
- severe headache
- changes in vision
- upper abd pain
- nausea and vomiting
- decreased urine output
- decreased platelets
- impaired liver function
- SOB
- edema
What is the difference between preeclampsia and gestational hypertension?
These women with GH have hypertension but no excess protein in the urine or other signs of organ damage. Some of these women do develop preeclampsia.
What is the difference between preeclampsia and chronic hypertension?
CH as present before pregnancy or that occurs before 20 weeks of pregnancy.
