Moss Capsule (4/4) Flashcards
1
Q
Small fraction of the tissue is what? The rest is…
A
Sporogenous.
The rest is photosynthetic until surface layer becomes hard & brown.
2
Q
What happens as the capsule develops?
A
Cells of sporogenous tissue separate to form spherical sporocytes which undergo meiosis to form 4 spores each (tetrads).
3
Q
What does shedding reveal?
A
Shedding of calyptras and operculum (capsule apex) reveals the peristome.
4
Q
What is the peristome composed of in Polytrichum?
A
- 64 short teeth which are fastened to the rim of the capsule by a membrane called epiphragm.
- Teeth are composed of whole cells.
5
Q
List four features of Funaria.
A
- No epiphragm
- Elongate, triangular teeth
- Teeth converge at the apex of the capsule.
- Teeth composed of remnants of cell walls.
6
Q
Humidity triggers what?
A
Movement of peristome and release of spores.
