Mosqutio P2 Flashcards
Mosqutio treatments
- Light traps are used and most effective used at a height of 3-5 feet (mid-range of an adult human)
- Carbon dioxide gas machines are also good treatments for mosquito control. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon monoxide.
- Female mosquitoes do the biting and are NOT attracted to light as other insects are.
- Male mosquitoes feed on the nectar from flowering plants.
- Larvicides are more effective than adulticides when treating for mosquitoes.
- Mosquito larva have 3 body parts as does the adult form.
- Peak season is june
- Mosquitoes are most active at dusk
- Mosquitoes go through COMPLETE metamorphosis egg-larvae-pipa-adult
- As with all pests, source reduction is the best means of control
Aedes Vexans
Multiple generations in a season
Aedes sollicitans (eastern salt march mosquitoes)
Has pointed abdomen
Migrates inland from costal marsh areas
Only one generation per year
Pupal stage usually 5-7 days
Cullseta melanura (black tailed mosquito)
Thorax has bristles
Is carrier of equine encaphalitis (EEE)
Anopheles
This mosquito has NO AIR TUBE, lies on the water surface
The Palposis is almost as long as proboscis
This mosquito can transmit Malaria to humans
Culex Salinarius (Salt Marsh Mosquito)
Salt marsh breeder and usually breeds in late season
Mansonia
Slow developer and has only one generation per year
This mosquito overwinters in the larval stage
Ticks
Gradual metamorphous = egg-nymph-adult
Immature nymphs also referred to as tick larvae have 6 legs but achieve 8 legs as an adult
3 host tick, it feeds 3 different host during its life cycle
2 body parts / 8 legs = arachnid
Ticks have no wings and one pair of antennae
Ticks have a 2 year life cycle
Black legged ticks are main vectors of Lyme disease
Lone star ticks are vectors of many tick borne diseases as well
Lyme disease is caused by a spirocate (a type of bacteria) called burgdorderi (has a corkscrew shape)
Black Flies
Complete Metamorphosis Egg-larva-pupa-adult
Larvicide treatments are most effective
Over 40 species in New England/ NH area but only 4 or 5 species are known to be an annoyance or problem to humans
Black flies breed in rapid flowing streams/waterways
Black flies are most active in daytime hours
Black flies are strong fliers and dan travel up to 20+ miles
Punkies/Midges
Complete metamorphosis egg-larva-pupa-adult
Are biting insects BUT incapable of biting though clothing
Punkies/Midges require moist areas for breeding
