The close proximity to the Eifel and Hunstrück Mountains, as well as the higher altitude of plantings (50-100M higher than most vineyards in the Mosel) result in lower annual temperatures.
High concentration of iron in the soil, especially in lower lying vineyards.
Cultivation extends up the side valleys, where only the southern exposure enables grapes to ripen.
