Mortality Statistics Flashcards
Morbidity
The burden of a disease in a population
Can be prevalence, incidence, or attack rate
Can also be used to describe the state of being diseased
Mortality
deaths
Why do we measure mortality?
Highlight differences in the risk of dying from a disease between people in different geographic areas and subgroups in the population
Mortality rates can serve as measures of disease severityInform whether treatment for disease has become more effective over time
Mortality rates may serve as a proxy for incidence when a disease is highly fatal and has a short duration
Mortality Rate
Percentage or proportion of the population that has died during a specified period of time
Mortality Rate Calculation
of people who died during time frame of interest / # of people in population during time frame of interest
Cause Specific Mortality Rate
Percentage or proportion of the population that has died due to a specified cause during a specified period of time
Calculating cause specific mortality rate
of people who died of cause x during time frame of interest / # of people in population during time frame of interest
Group Specific Mortality Rate
% or proportion of a specific population of interest that has died over a specific period of time
Calculating group specific mortality rate
of y people who died during time frame of interest / # of y people in pop during time frame of interest
Proportionate Mortality
% or proportion of the total deaths that are due to a specific cause
Calculating proportionate mortality
(# of people who died of cause Y during time frame of interest) / (# of deaths in population during time frame of interest)
Case Fatality Rate
% or proportion of all persons diagnosed with a given disease that will die with that disease over a certain time period
Probability of dying from a disease given that you have it
proportion
Calculating Case Fatality Rate
(# of people who died of disease Y during time frame of interest) / (# of people in population with disease Y during time frame of interest)
Case Fatality
% of people with a disease who die within a certain time after their disease was diagnosed
