adjectives
define or modify nouns. they provide additional information
adverbs
they can modify verbs adjectives and other adverbs
-mostly end in ly
-they answer how, how often, where, how much, when?
verbs
denote actions, processes and states.
Auxiliary verbs
helping verbs, to be , to have, to do
modal verbs
can could shall should…they carry information to do with notions such as ability, permission, likelihood and obligation
determiners
they introduce noun phrases and function as modifiers
-a, an, the, my, yours, this, that…
pronouns
short words that can replace nouns, i me my mine you your yours…..
prepositions
they position things in place or time or describe the manner in which an action is performed
e.g. where is the dog? UNDER the desk, BEHIND the couch, IN the room
neologism
newly coined words, expression or wage

interjections
words that express a sudden emotion. ouch, hello, damn, yes, okay …
Acronyms
words that evolve as the result of using the first letter of a series of words
–> ANZAC, lol, scuba, ATAR
initialism
when the first letter of each word is used but it isnt read as a word
–> RSVP
conjunctions
words that connect other words
