What is morphology
the study of the structure of words
Morpheme
smallest linguistic unit that has meaning
Open lexical category
words that can be changed
examples: run, walk, beautiful etc
Closed Lexical Category
words that cannot be changed
Examples: you, he, she, we, they, etc
Prefixes, Suffixes, Infixes
pre = beginning of the word
suffixes = end of the word
infixes = middle of the word
Inflectional Affixes
added to a word to modify the form of the word
*don’t change the meaning or grammatical category
s (third person or plural), ‘s, ed, en, ing, er, est
Derivational Affixes
added to words to change either the meaning or grammatical category

Affixation
adding an affix
Alternation
substitute one phoneme for another in a lexical root
man –> men
foot –> feet
ring –> rang
Suppletion
the root is replaced by a different form
example:
is –> was
go –> went
teach –> taught
Reduplication
Doubling of a free morpheme
Example:
hokey pokey
chit-chat
Compounding
combining two or more than two independent words
Example
blackbird
boyfriend
clickbait
Blending
combining parts of two different words
example
bromance
clipping
shortening a longer word
example
cell
limo
functional shifting
shifting grammatical category of a word without changing its form
example
she sent me a text
she texted me
