Study of system of underlying rules of our knowledge of words.
Lexicon
Mental dictionary; info about words and rules used to build them
Onomatopoeia
Word w/ connection of sound and meaning

Morpheme
Smallest unit of meaning in word
Syntactic category
Set of words that share significant number of grammatical characteristics
Monomorphemic
Consisting of single, free morpheme (car, brown)
Polymorphemic
Multiple morphemes. More than one (grammatically, anthropomorphic, linguistics)
Content words
Words with lexical meanings (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) words that can be looked up.
Open class

Words that accept new members
Function words
Words with functional meanings (determiners , auxiliary verbs, etc) don’t have “contentful meaning”
Closed class
Closed class
Words that don’t accept new members : determiners , auxillary verbs , etc
Bound morpheme
Morpheme that MUST attach to another
“ize” “trans”
Free morpheme
Morpheme that stands alone as word
Cat, butter, drink
Affix
A type of bound morpheme.
Prefixes, suffixes, infixes, circumfixes
Affixation
Process which morphemes attach to others
