Brigham applied for Mormon lands to become an independent state, but the US government said it had to be run by federal officials and called Utah after the Ute Indians who lived there

Brigham was appointed to be the first governor of Utah, but he began using the Danites to crush opposition from non-Mormons
What was the third stage of independence in 1857?
A non-Mormon give rot was sent to Utah along with 1500 soldiers to enforce federal rule and tension was increasing when suddenly the US government changed their minds and decided to try to reach a peaceful settlement with the Mormons
What was the fourth stage of independence?
The Mormons were eventually allowed to live their own lives in their own way, but Utah wasn’t allowed to become a state until polygamy was banned. They eventually agreed to a non-Mormon governor and polygamy was banned in 1890
