Moreland Ch 2 Flashcards
The design argument looks at design in the universe and infers a designer. Moreland first looks at the wide variety of design. What types of design are there?
Order–Qualitative (sequences arranged in order, such as colors in a spectrum), Spacial, Temporal
Purpose
as Beneficent order–promotion of human existence
as non-Beneficent order- things in the world work to produce certain ends. Unintelligent things together accomplish an apparently intelligent purpose, which shows a higher intelligent being controls them.
[…Understand each type of order listed. Note especially the following:]
Design as beauty–know the two types
Design as Sense and Cognition. Our ability to perceive and think about the world accurately is evidence that we are the product of an intelligent designer.
Taylor and Ewing’s view.
Design and Cosmic Constants.
Criticisms of the Design Argument
Uniqueness of the universe. We see only one universe so we can draw no conclusion about its design.
Infinite Regress. Who caused God?
The Conclusion of the Argument Is not the Christian God.
