Importance of writing
Writing impacted the religious faith by providing a place to preserve sacred stories rather than relying on the information to be passed down orally. The introduction of cruniform allowed new concepts like ‘love’, ‘life’ and ‘death’ to be recorded, moving beyond simply recording crops and animals. Sacred religious events were documented enabling religions to receive more exposure, resulting in the spread of religions. For example the Hebrew scriptures and Gospel stories were able to be written down which helped the development of religions and made it easier to sustain a system everyone agreed on. Additionally writing enable large amounts of information to be stored and coherent doctrinal systems were put in place that remained in place centuries later.
why did religions ceased to exist?
Religious traditions ceased to exist through conquering. When an area was conquered it was not uncommon for the people in power to order or encourage the original inhabitants of the land to convert from their chosen religion. They would do this by implementing heavy taxation and harsh punishment on those who didn’t abide by the conversion, however, in some cases the order was more direct, convert or die. This led to the original beliefs to be abolished completely. This occurred in the 15th and 16th century when the Catholic Spanish invaded the Americas, who at that time was inhabited by the indigenous faiths such as the Aztecs and Incans. The Spanish forced Catholic doctrines on the natives and if they didn’t abide they would subsequently be killed. This resulted in the complete destruction of indigenous beliefs in this area.
why some aspects of a religion became part of another religion
co-existence of religions ausgtralia had become pluralist as well as other countries. SYncretism = important as they developed elements and practices from other religous traditions allowing there practices to be developed. Syncretism allowed people transition to the conversion of a new religion while still holding some of their own beliefs . Downside is the watering down of religions
