more lights, color & absorption Flashcards
What is absorbance?
A direct measure of how much light is absorbed by a sample
What is transmittance?
The ratio of light that passes through a solution
How are absorbance and transmittance related?
They are inversely proportional; Th light absorbed by the solution is the absorbance and the light that passes through a solution is the transmittance
How does concentration and path length influence the amount of light absorbed by the solution?
Concentration is directly proportional to absorbance, the proportion of light is affected by the number of molecules it interacts with. The path length is also directly proportional to the absorbance, a longer path length will interact with larger molecules, increasing the absorbance
Calculate the transmittance of a sample
T = I / Io (initial)
Calculate the percentage transmittance of the smaple
%T = ( I/ Io) x 100
Calculate the absorbance of the sample
A = - log ( I/ Io) = - log T
