What is a drug?
A substance (other than food) which has a physiological effects when ingested/introduced into the body.
What are peds?
Substances that are used/taken by athletes to enhance an individuals sporting performance which artificially enhances personal characteristics certain peds are banned within sport.
What are recreational drugs?
Substances taken for recreational use rather than to enhance sporting performance.
What is a lifestyle?
Refers to the choices we make about how we live our lives.
What is a sedentary lifestyle?
A lifestyle that includes no or very little physical activity and exercise. Which is associated with poor health and fitness health.
What is an active lifestyle?
A lifestyle involving regular physical activity and exercise to improve an individuals health.

What are the positive/negative effects of stimulants?
positive- keeps user alert and improves reaction time.
negative- dehydration, high blood pressure.
What are the positive/negative effects of beta blockers?
positive- blocking the effects of adrenaline.
negative- affects blood supply (hands&feet), tired, dizzy.
What are the positive/negative effects of peptide hormones?
positive- increase the production of red blood cells a process called ‘blood doping’.
negative- high blood pressure, thickening of blood.
What are the positive/negative effects of diuretics?
positive- reducing weight quickly.
negative- increasing the water passed out of the body as urine, dehydration, muscle weakness, low blood pressure.
What are the positive/negative effects of anabolic steroids?
positive- increases muscle mass, strength, quicker recovery and encouragement to train.
negative- high blood pressure, liver, kidney, heart damage.
What are the positive/negative effects of human growth hormone (HGH)?
positive- a type of peptide hormone that help to develop muscle mass increase lean body mass.
negative- joint pain, vision problems, muscle weakness, thickening of blood, increased risk of stroke/heart attack.
What are class A drugs?
They are classed as very dangerous drugs: cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, LSD.
What are class B drugs?
They are classed as the middle class drugs; cannabis, amphetamines.
What are class C drugs?
They are classed as the lower class drugs which are less powerful; anabolic steroids.
