More Forces Flashcards
What are forces?
Forces are pushes or pulls.
What can forces change?
Forces can change the shape or size of an object, change the speed things are moving, and change the direction of a moving object.
What is the unit for measuring force?
The unit for measuring force is the newton (N).
What is friction?
Friction is a force caused by two things rubbing together.
What are kinds of friction?
Air resistance and water resistance are kinds of friction.
What is upthrust?
Upthrust is an upwards force from water or air that allows things to float.
What are contact forces?
Contact forces only act when two objects or materials are touching.
What are non-contact forces?
Non-contact forces can have an effect without objects touching.
What are the three non-contact forces?
The three non-contact forces are magnetism, gravity, and static electricity.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of substance in your body measured in kilograms (kg), while weight is a force caused by gravity pulling on your body measured in newtons (N).
Does mass change based on location?
No, mass does not change based on location, but weight depends on the force of gravity.
What happens to weight on the Moon compared to Earth?
An object on the Moon would have a smaller weight than on Earth due to the Moon’s weaker gravity.
What is Hooke’s Law?
Hooke’s Law states that the extension of a spring is proportional to the force on it.
What happens if a spring is stretched too far?
If a spring is stretched too far, the extension stops being proportional to the force and it may exceed its elastic limit.
What is a force meter?
Force meters have springs inside them.
What happens to Plasticine when stretched?
Plasticine will stretch with a force but will not return to its original shape afterwards.
