Punishment and Obedience. Fear of punishment is the main reason for conformity.
What is the age range for stage 1?
Toddler - 7 years.
What is stage 2 called?
Instrumental Relativist.
Describe stage 2.
Conformity based on self (ego/narcissism)
What is the age range for stage 2?
Preschool - school age.
What is stage 3 called?
Interpersonal concordance.
What is the basis of stage 3?
Others approval. Doing what family, group, nation, society think is best.Response based on empathy/I know how it feels.

School age through adult.
What is stage 4 called?
Law and order.
What is the basis for stage 4?
Respect for the law and it’s underlying morality.

Adolescence and adulthood.
What is stage 5 called?
Social contract Legalistic
What is the basis for stage 5?
Autonomy. Personal experience. Higher moral principle applies. Do it because its right.

Middle aged and older adults.

Universal ethical principle.
