What are some strengths and drawbacks of the just war theory?
Strengths: it can be used by everyone, nothing religious about the theory.
Has the potential to prevent wars if the theory is followed.
Drawbacks: not everyone has the same opinion on what a just war is.
Name all the conditions of the just war theory.
- It must be fought by proper authority.
- The cause must be just.
- Must be fought to establish good or to overcome evil.
- There must be a reasonable chance of success.
- Must be the last resort
- Civilians must not be harmed.
Name two causes of war.
Defence of own country or ally.
To extend your country’s power and/or resources.
Give two strengths and two weaknesses of utilitarianism.
Strengths: it aims to maximise happiness.
It is a selfless theory.
Weaknesses: the minority of people are disadvantaged.
What causes happiness in the short term may cause misery in the long term.
What does a utilitarian believe?
They believe that it is right to act in a way that is best for the majority of people.
