Moral Experts Flashcards
Who created Moral Experts?
Peter Singer
Why did leading philosophers claim that moral philosophers CANNOT be moral experts?
1) They don’t have special information for the public regarding what is right and what is wrong.
2) An idea that moral judgements are emotive and doesn’t play in formation with moral philosophers
In Ryle’s Essay ‘On Forgetting the Difference between Right and Wrong’ from Essays in Moral Philosophy. What was Ryle’s argument that Moral expertise isn’t possible?
Ryle argues that morality (right and wrong) involves caring about it and YES it is important, NOT always have to sincerely know about it to be morally good. A honest man is not always an expert at everything.
(IMPORTANT) In Moral Experts, what does Peter Singer defends?
Peter Singer defends that Moral Philosophers ARE capable of being moral experts.
(IMPORTANT) What was the reason behind Peter Singer’s argument in Moral Experts
Moral philosophers are capable of being moral experts because they yield knowledge of morality as it is their expertise and advantage.
Moral philosophers are more competent in knowing essential concepts and arguments of morality that help them to produce sound arguments and logic than a regular person.
Moral philosophers have more time than a regular person to assess and research the background of a moral issue.
Why society is imperfect in morality and what does it require for a man to do?
Society is flawed in morality because everyone doesn’t have the same agreement on an issue nor weigh the same.
A man must become a thinking man and cannot live by the code. He must assess the issue and determine the information of an issue such as animals (how many suffered for this, is it right to eat meat? methods of slaughtering). before making an ethical decision of consequentialism
