Define mood
A patient’s sustained, experienced emotional state over a period time. It may be subjectively (in the patient’s own words) or objectively as dysthymic (low), euthymic (normal) or elated (elevated)
Define affect
Refers to the transient flow of emotion in response to a particular stimulus
What is a primary mood disorder?
A mood disorder that does not result from another medical or psych condition. Either unipolar (depressive disorder, dysthymia) or bipolar (bipolar affective disorder, cyclothymia)
What is a secondary mood disorder?
A mood disorder that results from another medical or psychiatric condition
What are the core symptoms of depression?
Anhedonia, low mood, lack of energy
What are the cognitive symptoms of depression?
Lack of concentration, negative thoughts, excessive guilt, suicidal ideation
What are the biological symptoms of depression?
Diurnal variation in mood, early morning weakening, loss of libido, psychomotor retardation, weight loss and loss of appetite
What are the psychotic symptoms of depression?
Hallucinations, delusions
What is the ICD-10 classification of depression?
Mild = 2 core + 2 other
Moderate = 2 core + 3-4 other
Severe = 3 core symptoms + >4 others
Severe with psychosis = 3 core + > others + psychosis
