Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) Contraindications

- Phenelzine
- Isocarboxazid
- Avoid tyramine-rich foods bc MAOIs prevent tyramines from being broken down ⇒ HTN crisis risk ⇒ monitor BP !!!
- Don’t use w/ other meds that ↑ serotonin lvls bc you’ll have higher risk for serotonin syndrome: excessive serotonin lvls ⇒ causing HYPOthermia, muscle rigidity, etc.
- Monitor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors
- Monitor LFTs bc they impact liver
- Don’t abruptly stop

Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) Side-Effects
A
- – triptyline
- – ipramine
- QT-prolongation ⇒ cardiac dysrhythmia
- Anticholinergic effects: “I’m dry and blind”
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Dry eyes
- Constipation
- Urinary retention
- Orthostatic hypotension, dizziness from ↓ BP ⇒ fall risk and impaired coordination
- Sedation
- Suicidal ideation
