Montgomery bus boycott
considere to be the starting point of the Civil Rights movement (1955-1956)
Who organized the freedom rides?
in 1947 the Congress for Racial Equality ( CORE) organised “freedom rides” on interstate buses, which led to arrests and little to no publicity.
Were was the first bus boycott organised?
In Boston Rouge, Louisiana wich led to partial integration of city buses.

Who is Rosa Parks and why is she important?
She worked for civil rights form 1932 onwards. She failed to registere to vote for the seconf time and met the bus driver who would get her arrested 12 years later. She refused to follow the rules of the bus entering. She was forced of the bus and left. Then she joined NAACP.
ED Nixon, MLK jr. and other met to coordinate efforts:
- a promise from the city and bus companies to treat Black people with courtesy
- equality in seating
- Black drivers for routes that mostly carried Black passengers
(MIA) Montgomery Improvement Assosiation
they formed on the 6th of December 1955, with MLK Jr. as it’s president (only 27 t.o. at that point). It was only created only to coordiante the continuation of the boycott.
Constitutionality of bus segregation
A case filed in court. MLK Jr.’s and ED Nixon’s homes - bombed.
White Citizens Council
This council was created to break the boycott, because it became a real pain to the city officials.
21st of February
90 boycott leaders arrested on conspiracy changes.
December 20th 1956
buses orfered to be desegregated by the city officials. While legal segregation of buses ended, in practice the enforcement of social segregation was undertaked by radical segregationists.
Results:
Black people did not fear KKK and white people in general as much, they become more organised and defiant in face of violence and discrimination.
