where is Monserrat located?
it is part of an island located in the Caribbean Sea (formed where the Atlantic plate subducts beneath the Caribbean plate)
what occurred in Monserrat?
1995- volcano began to erupt huge clouds of ash, and over the next 5 years these eruptions continued- with pyroclastic flows affecting much of the island.
what some economic consequences?
E-the capital Plymouth was destroyed which contained the islands main services such as government officials and hospitals
E-Two thirds of all housing and 3/4 of all infrastructure were destroyed
E- unemployment rose and tourism decreased
what are some social consequences?
- dozens of people lost their lives and more than 7000 moved to other countries
- a lot of farmland was destroyed or abandoned as it was too close to the volcano- severely affected agriculture
- a top-heavy population pyramid was created as younger people no longer saw an economic future on the island.
what is an environmental impact?
two thirds of the island is uninhabitable so no wildlife thrives
what is now being done?
- a volcanic observatory has been built in the south to monitor the volcano
- new infrastructure, such as roads and a new airport have been built in the safer northern part of the island
- Monserrat is now trying to rebuild its tourism industry
