Monomers and Polymers and Polysaccharides Flashcards
What is a monomer?
A monomer is smaller units which can create larger molecules.
How do monomers look?
Single spheres not touching each other.
What is a polymer?
A polymer is made from lots of monomers that are bonded together.
How do polymers look?
A chain of monomers.
Name 3 monomers.
Glucose
Amino Acid
Nucleotide
What are the polymers for glucose?
Starch
Cellulose
Glycogen
What is the polymer for amino acid?
Protein
What are the polymers for nucleotide?
DNA
RNA
What can carbohydrates be classed as?
Monosaccharides
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
What is a monosaccharide made up of?
The monomers of carbohydrates.
3 examples of monosaccharides?
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
3 examples of disaccharides?
Sucrose
Maltose
Lactose
3 examples of polysaccharides?
Starch
Cellulose
Glycogen
What are the two isomers of glucose?
Alpha glucose
Beta glucose
How do you count the carbons in glucose?
Start from the Oxygen and go clockwise.
What is an isomer?
An isomer has the same molecular formula but different structure.
What is the molecular formula of glucose?
C6H12O6
What is the difference between alpha glucose and beta glucose?
On alpha glucose, hydrogen is on top whereas hydroxide is on the bottom. For beta it is flipped.
What elements do carbohydrates contain?
Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen.
