Monomers And Polymers Flashcards
What is a monomer?
One of the molecules linked together in the chain of polymer
E.g. glucose, amino acid, nucleotides
What is a polymer?
A long chain molecule made up of large numbers of repeating units linked together
E.g starch, proteins, DNA
What are 2 monomers called?
Diner
What are 3 monomers called?
Trimer
What’s a condensation reaction?
When you join 2 biological monomers are linked together water is produced
What is hydrolysis?
Biological polymers can be separated into monomers by adding water to break the bonds
Lipids aren’t polymers but are an exception
Although lipids are not polymers they are also formed by a condensation reaction, and are separated into their components/molecules by hydrolysis
What does hydrolysis require?
A catalyst
In the lab we use acid or alkali but within the body enzymes are used
