Monomers and Polymers Flashcards
What is monomers?
Monomers are smaller units from which larger units are made.
What are polymers?
Polymers are made from small repeating units called monomers.
What are some examples of monomers?
Some examples of monomers are nucleic acid, amino acid, glycerol, a & b glucose, fatty acids, and fructose.
What are isomers?
Isomers are molecules with the molecular formula but different molecular arrangements.
What is DNA?
A polymer
What are the monomers of DNA?
RNA nucleotide
What are the 3 components the nucleotide is made up of?
- A nitrogenous base
- A pentose sugar
- one or more phosphate groups
What is a condensation reaction?
A condensation reaction joins two molecules together and involves the elimination of water molecules.
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
Hydrolysis breaks a chemical bond between two molecules and involves the use of a water molecule.
Do all polymers undergo the same hydrolysis reaction or different?
The same.
Why is being able to split polymers important?
When they split they release energy that is stored in them
