What two categories are flowering plants divided into?
monocotyledons and dicotyledons
What do monocots include?
daffodils, tulips, grasses and cereals such as wheat and barley
What do dicots include?
beans, peas, peanuts, sunflowers, roses and trees such as chestnut, oak and ash.
Are the more dicots or monocots?
There are greater numbers and varieties of dicots than there are of monocots.
Define a cotyledon
A cotyledon is a seed leaf
Where do monocots get their names from?
Since they have one cotyledon in the seed. A cotyledon is the first leaf that develops in a seed.
What is a cotyledon specialised for?
It is often specialised for food storage
Are monocots mostly herbaceous or woody plants? What does this mean/
Herbaceous plants. This means they are soft, because they do not contain woody parts.
How are monocot vascular bundles spread out in the stem?
They are scattered at random in the stem
How are monocot flowering parts arranged?
In groups of three of multiples of three e.g. there may be 3, 6,9, etc petals in the flower of a monocot
Describe monocot leaves
They are long and narrow with veins that run parallel along the leaf (parallel venation)
Where do dicots get their name?
They have two cotyledons in each seed
Are dicots herbaceous or woody?
They can be herbaceous (peas, sunflowers, tomatoes) or woody (roses, or oak and ash trees)
Describe dicot leaves
They are often broad and they have a network of veins
How are the vascular bundles of dicots arranged?
They are arranged in a ring around the inside of the stem
