Monoclonal Aniptibodies Flashcards
How are monoclonal antibodies made?
A mouse is injected with an antigen. The mouse will produce lymphocytes, which will produce antibodies that attack the specific antigen that has been injected into the mouse
What are some uses of monoclonal antibodies?
Pregnancy tests, Diagnostic of diseases, Treating disease
How do monoclonal antibodies help treat cancer?
They trigger the immune system to begin targeting specific cancers, Block receptors on the surface of cancer cells, They carry radioactive substances for radioactive therapy to destroy cancer cells without damaging normal cells
What is a major advantage of monoclonal antibodies?
They target specific diseases so they can be used in more specialised treatments to help patients in speacial circumstances
What is a major disadvantage of monoclonal antibodies?
The making of monoclonal antibodies is very difficult and takes a lot of time, so they can’ be produced at the potential rate they’re needed
