Name the MAOI’s
Phenelzine (available through SAS)
Tranylcypromine (Pramine)
MAOI MOA
Irreversibly inhibit monoamine oxidases A and B, increasing the synaptic concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin
MAOI Indications
Major depression (third line) - reserved for use by psychiastrists
MAOI Adverse Effects
Orthostatic hypotension
Sleep disturbances (take before 3pm)
Headache
Drowsiness
Fatigue
MAOI Counselling
Take last dose before 3pm to avoid insomnia
Avoid foods containing tyramine while taking and for 2 weeks after stopping the medicine
Reduce caffeine intake if feeling jittery
May cause drowsiness and increase the effects of alcohol
Get up gradually from sitting or lying
Do not stop taking abruptly, unless you experience heart palpitations, or severe headaches
