Family Tree
Rochelle (Shelly)
● Personal History:
o DOB: March 27th, 1991
o Female
o Born at Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach, FL
o Moved to Brevard Zoo in June 1993
o Parents are “Monk Jung” (sire) and “Melaine/Monique” (dam)
o Current offspring: Tika, Poppy*, Primrose, Olive
● Physical Description:
o She is very dark except for her stomach which is lighter
o The skin on her face is also dark
o Earned the nickname “Shelly with a Belly” due to her distinct large round
stomach
o The hair on the sides of her head sticks out and up while the hair on the top of
her head sticks forward
● Demeanor:
o Alpha female
o Shelly is a very laid-back monkey; We joke that she seems wise and contemplative in her older age
o She is an excellent mother: very attentive but allows her kids to explore
o She has trouble focusing during training sessions
o She plays occasionally with her children (Prim and Olive)
Shooter
● Personal History:
o DOB: ~1-30 June, 1996
o Male, wild born
o From Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, TX in June 1997
o Moved to Alexandria Zoological Park in Alexandria, LA in May 2003
o Moved to Brevard Zoo in April 2008
o Parents are unknown
o Current offspring: Poppy, Sandy, Primrose, Paco*, Olive, Blue Steel
● Physical Description:
o He is very dark except for his lighter stomach and golden colored rear
o The skin on his face is also dark
o He is the largest monkey and has the stockiest body of all the monkeys
o He has raised eyebrows, so he looks like “The Joker”
● Demeanor:
o Alpha male
o Shooter is a great father, protecting, grooming, and playing with all the babies
o This includes Mateo to who he has seemingly adopted as his son
o He focuses well and does a great job in training
o Shooter tends to be neophobic, taking longer than the other monkeys to enter
new habitats and/or the cognition center
o He spends most of his time resting/sitting
o He frequently intercedes when social situations between monkeys become too
rough
Prim
● Personal History:
o DOB: February 16th, 2015
o Male
o Born at Brevard Zoo
o Parents are “Shooter” (sire) and “Shelly” (dam)
o Current full siblings: Poppy, Olive
o Current half-siblings: Tika, Paco, Sandy*, Daisy, Blue Steel
● Physical Description:
o He has gold fur on his rear
o He is much thinner and lankier than Shooter but is starting to fill out
o He has pink skin around his eyes and on his lips, but they are darkening
● Demeanor:
o Beta male; Prim is approaching adulthood and outranks the females
o He plays with all the other monkeys but can get too rough
o He practices his skills as a future alpha by intervening when Daisy gets too rough
with the infants
o He can be easy to lose track of during scans because he often spends time in
other habitats by himself
o He can be mistaken for an adult female since he is the same size
Tika
● Personal History:
o DOB: February 17th, 2003
o Female
o Born at Brevard Zoo
o Parents are “Jimmy” (sire) and “Shelly” (dam)
o Current offspring: Sandy, Paco, Daisy, Blue Steel
o Current half-siblings: Poppy, Primrose, Olive
● Physical Description:
o Tika has a lighter stomach and mottled pink eyes
o She is typically thinner than Shelly when without an infant
o She has a longer clitoris than Shelly
o The very top of her head hair looks like its combed towards the front
● Demeanor:
o Lowest ranking monkey
o Tika is our “difficult monkey”
o She can be grabby towards people
o We often say that she is much nicer when she has an infant
o Often dismissive towards people or other monkeys
o Often seen separate from her mother and siblings possibly due to low ranking
o She is very focused and does well in training when she decides to participate
o She is a good mom to her kids (very protective) but does not help with other juveniles including her siblings
Daisy
● Personal History:
o DOB: August 10th, 2017
o Female
o Born at Brevard Zoo
o Parents are “Shooter” (sire) and “Tika” (dam)
o Current siblings: Sandy, Paco, Blue Steel
o Current-half siblings: Poppy*, Prim, Olive
● Physical Description:
o Daisy is the only mid-sized monkey right now (early 2021)
o She has pink skin surrounding her eyes and mouth
o She has a very triangular head of hair
o The hair on her mid-section is lighter, while that of her limbs and head are dark
● Demeanor:
o Daisy is the most active and playful monkey
o She can be a little chaotic; carrying things to the top of the habitat just to drop
them and pursuing playmates that are not reciprocating play
o She frequently spends time in the cognition center and is a training rockstar; very
focused and human oriented
o She spends time with all of the monkeys but currently spends most of her time
with her mom Tika and sister Blue
o She is the only monkey to consistently interact with people that are not
associated with food rewards
Olive
● Personal History:
o DOB: January 25th, 2020
o Female
o Born at Brevard Zoo
o Parents are “Shooter” (sire) and “Shelly” (dam)
o Current siblings: Poppy, Primrose
o Current half-siblings: Tika, Paco, Sandy, Daisy, Blue
o Olive has had seizures in the past; thus, it is important to look out for signs of
seizure in the future
● Physical Description:
o Olive has a very symmetrical face, often described as the perfect monkey
o She is thinner and more agile than Mateo, with rounder patches of pink skin
around her eyes
o Her fur is dark everywhere except for her stomach and face
o Fur is very full and even
o Her haircut forms a crown of fur that extends straight ahead of her
● Demeanor:
o Olive becomes more and more independent from Shelly everyday
o She often plays with Prim, Daisy, and/or Mateo
o She is very curious and goes into other exhibits or the cognition center by herself
o She spends time with Prim, who sometimes acts as her babysitter (i.e. displays alloparental care)
Mateo
● Personal History:
o DOB: ~February 2020
o Male
o Species: Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus
o Wild born monkey who was captured and brought into the illegal pet trade
o He was found on June 24th 2020 in the console of a man’s pickup truck crossing
the border from Mexico into Texas
o He was temporarily placed under quarantine from July 1st to September 18th (2020) at the Dallas Zoo
o He came to Brevard Zoo on September 18th, 2020
o His parents are unknown but Shooter acts like a foster dad
● Physical Description:
o Mateo has a very rotund belly
o He also has a mohawk with wiry hair all around his face
o He has goldish fur on his rear
o His pink patches of skin around his eyes are more ovular than Olive’s
● Demeanor:
o Mateo is a ‘scaredy-cat’ who always runs to Shooter when perturbed, he sometimes screams when scared or even when unprovoked
o He is still timid about huddling with all of the other monkeys
o He may display some coping behavior like tail chewing when by himself
o He is nearly as comfortable with Prim, when he is not playing to rough, as he has
become with Shooter
Blue Steel (Blue)
● Personal History:
o DOB: September 17th, 2020
o Female
o Species: Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus
o Born at Brevard Zoo
o Parents are “Shooter” (sire) and “Tika” (dam)
o Current siblings: Sandy, Paco, Daisy
o Current half-siblings: Poppy, Prim, Olive
● Physical Description:
o Blue is the smallest and youngest monkey
o She has two black spots on her nose, one above each nostril
o She has less hair on her underside than the other monkeys, but this is filling in
● Demeanor:
o She spends most of the time huddling or being carried by Tika
o She climbs independently more and more often
o She is curious and human oriented; she sticks her chin out to greet familiar people
o Blue has been spotted playing with Mateo, Daisy, Olive, Prim
