What are the roles of the monarchy?
The role of the monarchy is mainly ceremonial but has
-the king opens and dissolves parliament
-gives the kings speech setting out a governments legislative plan
- approves bills before they become a law (gives royal assent)
-Holds weekly meetings with the Prime Minister – does not have a say in what the Govt does, but can advise, encourage and warn.
Where is the three main sources of funding for the monarch?
The sovereign grant- money given to the royal household by the treasury to support the king’s duties.
Privy purse- income from the duchy of Lancaster, portfolio of land, and property assets. main purpose is to financially cover duties that are not met by the Sovereign grant (other family members etc.)
Person income- this is from the monarch’s personal investments and private estates, to cover personal expenses.
What are key issues relating to the monarch?
In this day and age, do we still really need the monarch?
Was the queens death an excuse to change the system?
Image problem- how damaging have the stories been about the duke or york and megan and harry stepping down from their royal positions.
