Momentum Definitions Flashcards
linear momentum
the product of the mass and velocity of the object
linear momentum statement
a vector and is the same direction as the velocity vector
linear momentum equation
p=mv
Newton’s second law
the net force acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum
Newton’s second law equation
Fnet=delta P / delta t
isolated system
a system that has no net external force acting on it
the law of conservation of linear momentum
the total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant (is conserved)
elastic collision
a collision in which both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved
inelastic collision
collision in which only momentum is conserved
impulse
the product of the net force and the contact time
impulse equation
J=Fnet x delta t
impulse statement
vector quantity and is in the same direction as the net force vector
what is impulse equivalent to
change in momentum (J= delta P)
impulse secondary equation
delta p = Fnet x delta t
