Momentum and Impulse Lessons 1-4 Flashcards
What is Momentum (P) defined as
It is something’s Mass (kg) multiplied by its Velocity (m/s) expressed in kg*m/s
what can change the momentum of an object?
An external net force
What does a net force on an object do
it accelerates it (change in Fnet=m*(change in acceleration) which results in a change of momentum
how do you get momentum from a force applied to a given mass
F=ma
F=m((Vf-Vi)/t)
F=(mVf-mVi)/t
F=change in P/t
What is Impulse
its is change in momentum calculated by multiplying the change in velocity times the mass it has the units kg*m/s
What happens to momentum in an elastic collision
It is conserved!!
What happens to momentum in an inelastic collision
it is conserved!!
What happens to kinetic energy in an inelastic collision
It is not conserved!
What happens to kinetic energy in an elastic collision
It is conserved!!!
