momentum Flashcards
momentum
the product of mass and velocity
vector quantity
has magnitude and direction
greater mass / velocity = more momentum
momentum formula
momentum (kgm/s) = mass(kg) x velocity (m/s)
conservation of momentum
total momentum before event = total momentum after event
in closed system
closed system
something not effected by external forces
momentum conserved in collisions + explosions
cannon ball and cannon example
when cannon fired cannon ball gains forward momentum cannon gains backwards momentum before event momentum=0 no objects moves after event momentum = 0 with cannon and cannon ball moving in opposite directions
ball example
ball a and ball b will collide
before event = ball b is stationary so momentum =0
white ball has momentum and moves in a positive direction and hits red ball causing red ball to have momentum
white balls continue moving with small momentum and velocity
combined momentum of white and red ball = white og momentum
force and momentum
force causes change in momentum
when a non zero resultant force acts on object there is a change in velocity causes a change in momentum
calculating rate of momentum change
force = change in momentum/ time
force involved = rate of change
