Momentum Flashcards
Momentum
A measurement of how difficult it is to stop a moving object
Equation for momentum
Momentum (kgm/s) = Mass (kg) x Velocity (m/s)
p = m x v
Is momentum a vector or scalar quantity? Why?
Vector quantity because it has direction as well as magnitude
Conservation of momentum
In a closed system, the total momentum before an event and total momentum after an event are the same
Law of conservation of momentum
Momentum is conserved in any collision or explosion, providing no external forces to act on the objects
What happens in a closed system where no external forces act?
. The total momentum before the collision is equal to the total
momentum after the collision.
. If one object loses momentum, the other object must gain the same
amount of momentum
