Momentum Flashcards
Define momentum
The pruduct of an object’s mass and its velocity
Linear momentum
Vector quantity with the same direction as the velocity of an object
State Newton’s second law in terms of momentum
The net force acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum of the object in the direction of the net force
What is a SYSTEM?
A system is a collection of two or more objects that interact with each other
What are INTERNAL FORCES in a asystem?
They are the forces exchanged by the objects of a system
What are EXTERNAL FORCES of a system?
They are forces originated from a source other than the objects within the system and which are not balanced by other forces
What is an ISOLATED SYSTEM?
It is a system on which the external net force is zero
State the principle of CONSERVATION OF LINEAR MOMENTUM
-the total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant (is concerved)
In a isolated system the sum of the initial momentum is equal to
The sum of the final momentum
Define INELASTIC COLLISIONS
Collisions where kinetic energy is not conserverd
Define ELASTIC COLLISIONS
Collisions where kinetic energy is conserverd
Name the type of collision where kinetic energy is not conserverd
Inelastic collision
Name the type of collisions where kinetic energy is conserverd
Elastic collision
Newton’s craddle is an example of what type of collision?
Elastic collision
Define IMPULSE
The product of the resultant/netforce acting on an object and the time the net force acts on the object
