Momentum Flashcards
Conservation of momentum
Momentum before a collision is EQUAL to the Momentum after if there are no external forces acting
state the equation that links, momentum, mass and velocity
momentum = mass x velocity
What are the units of momentum?
kgm/s
A ball of mass 10kg is thrown with a velocity of 10m/s. Calculate it’s momentum.
100 kgm/s
What will happen to an objects momentum if it’s velocity increases?
It’s momentum will increase
In an explosion, what can be said about the momentum before the two objects explode away?
Their momentum before = 0, so each objects momentum must be equal and OPPOSITE in direction afterwards
What is Newton’s third law?
If object A exerts a force on object B, Object B must exert and equal and opposite force on object A
State the equation linking Force, change in momentum and time.
Force = change in momentum / time
Seatbelts, Crumple Zones and Air bags all reduce the injury to a passenger by….
increasing the time of impact, thus reducing the force acting on the passenger
An object of mass 12kg is travelling at a speed of 10m/s. What is its momentum?
momentum = 120kgm/s
If an object undergoes a change in momentum of 10kgm/s in 3 seconds, what force is required?
3.3N
What is the unit of force?
Newtons
