Moments, Torque & Couples Flashcards
1
Q
What is the moment of a force?
A
The turning effect of a force
2
Q
What is the equation fora a moment of a force? (Incl units)
A
Moment = force x (perpendicular) distance
Nm
3
Q
What is the principle of moments?
A
For a body in rotational equilibrium, the sum of the anti-clockwise moments about any point is equal to the sum of clockwise moments about the same point
4
Q
What are the 3 steps for solving equations using moments?
A
- Identify the point about which the object will rotate
- Identify all forces acting clockwise, sum the clockwise moments (using the perpendicular component of each force)
- Do the same for the anticlockwise moments
- Total moment = clockwise - anticlochaise
5
Q
What is a couple?
A
Two forces that are:
- parallel
- equal magnitude
- opposite direction
- act along different lines
6
Q
Define the torque of a couple
A
The product of the magnitude of one of the forces F & the perpendicular separation d between the forces
