Q

What is the principle of moments?

A

For a body in rotational equilibrium, the sum of the anti-clockwise moments about any point is equal to the sum of clockwise moments about the same point

Q

What are the 3 steps for solving equations using moments?

A
  1. Identify the point about which the object will rotate
  2. Identify all forces acting clockwise, sum the clockwise moments (using the perpendicular component of each force)
  3. Do the same for the anticlockwise moments
  4. Total moment = clockwise - anticlochaise
