Moments, Levers and Gears - Paper 2 Flashcards
Define moment
The moment due to a force is the turning effect of the force.
What does a lever consist of?
- A pivot
- An effort
- A load
Why are levers useful?
Levers, such as this one, make use of moments to act as a force multiplier.
They allow a larger force to act upon the load than is supplied by the effort, so it is easier to move large or heavy objects.
Define gear
A gear is a wheel with a toothed edges that rotates on an axle or shaft.
Do linked gears rotate in the same or opposite direction?
Opposite
How do differently sized gears affect moments?
If the driven gear is made larger is will rotate more slowly but with a greater moment (low gear ratio).
If the driven gear is made smaller it will rotate more quickly but with a smaller moment (high gear ratio).
