Moments Flashcards
What is a moment?
The product of force (F) x perpendicular distance (d).
What are some real life examples of moments?
Opening a door.
Steering wheel.
What is the equation for a moment?
M = F x d
What are the quantities involved in M = F x d?
M = moments / Nm
F = force / N
d = perpendicular distance from force to pivot / m.
What 2 conditions must exist for a body to be static?
- FR = 0
- Summation of moments about any point = 0
What can be said about any body that is static?
Summation of anti-clockwise moments about any point is equal to summation of clockwise moments about the same point.
What is the equation for a system that is static.
F1 x d1 = F2 x d2
Wha this the definition for the principle of moments?
For a system in rotational equilibrium sum of clockwise moments = sum of anti-clockwise moments about any point.
