Moments Flashcards
What is a moment?
The turning effect of a force around a point. It’s the force x the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force.
What does the moment of a force depend on?
The size of the force and how far the force is applied from the turning point
What does the principle of motion state?
That for a body to be in equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments about a point must be equal to the sum of anticlockwise moments about the same point
What is the equation for moments?
M = F x d
What is the equation for a couple?
Moment of a couple = size of one of those forces(N) x perpendicular distance between the lines of action of the forces(m)
What are moments measured in?
Nm (newton metres)
What does a couple not cause?
Any resultant linear forces
What is the long equation of the moment of a force?
Moment of a force = force(N) x perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force(could also be specified as the pivot)
