What is moment
The turning effect of a force about a pivot
How to calculate the size of moment
M = F × d
Where:
M = moment in newton metres (Nm)
F = force in newtons (N)
d = perpendicular distance of the force to the pivot in metres (m)
The forces should be perpendicular to the distance from the pivot
For example, on a horizontal beam, the forces which will cause a moment are those directed upwards or downwards
What is the principle of moment
A system will not rotate ( is in equilibrium) if the clockwise moments equal the anti-clockwise moments
How can you find the centre of gravity for regular shapes
lines of symmetry
How can you find the centre of gravity for irregular shapes
Hang up the object
Suspend from a location near the edge
Hang from a plum line and mark the object
Do the same from another location
Where they intersect is the centre of gravity
