Q

If the casting arc is too wide for the amount of line beyond your rod tip will the loop be too big? How do you fix it?

A

Yes
Reduce size of casting arc.
1. Have student try changing their grip by placing their index finger on top of the cork.
2. Have student try changing their grip to a V style grip (thumb rotated around to the inside
of the cork).
3. Rotate the rod 180 degrees so the reel faces up. Keep the reel pressed into the front of the
forearm while casting.
4. Tuck the rod butt under the student’s shirt cuff or strap the rod butt to the forearm using velcro, etc.
5. Have the student move his/her casting hand inward so they are casting right in front of their face,
with the rod stopping at their hat brim during the back cast.
6. Watch the space between the reel seat and the forearm; have the student reduce the space.
7. Have the student watch their thumb and where it is pointing; adjust to the desired position.
8. Have student cast to a target that is close (approximately 25’) this will force a smaller arc in order
to hit the target.

Q

When casting further than 35’ what two things do you have to change? Why do you change these two things?

A
  1. Widen casting Arc. As the length of the line increases, the weight of the added line increases rod bend. In order to create a Straight Line Rod Tip Path, and a resultant narrow loop, the casting arc must also increase.
  2. Increase pause at the end of stroke to allow line to straighten and remove slack.

reference
Essential Casting Mechanic #4 – The size of the casting arc must vary with the length of line past the rod tip.
Essential Casting Mechanic #5 – There must be a pause at the end of each stroke, which varies in duration with the amount of line beyond the rod tip.
