Molecules Flashcards
2 or more atoms held together with a chemical bond
Molecule
The connection between atoms
Chemical bond
Representation of an object
Model
The atoms that make up a molecule + the specific quantities
Atomic composition
The specific way the atoms are arranged
Chemical structure
A molecule whose atom occur in a constant ratio and a repeating pattern
Extended structure
Structure of atoms or molecules in a 3D pattern
Crystal
Structure of molecules with a repeating chain pattern
Polymer
Glucose and fructose both have an atomic composition of C6H12O6 but they are different molecules. What is most likely the major difference between them?
They have a different chemical structure
List 2 differences between crystals and polymers. Hint: one is shape and one is composition.
Polymers are chains and crystals are a 3D pattern. Crystals can be atoms or molecules but polymers can only be molecules.
What is an element?
A substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms held together with a chemical bond
When making molecule models, what do the beads represent? The sticks?
The beads represent the atoms and the sticks represent the bonds
Can you have 2 different crystals that are made of the same atom?
Yes
C3H4 has how many elements? Atoms?
2 elements and 7 atoms
