Molecule vocab Flashcards
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together.
Chemical bond
Connection between atoms.
Model
Representation of an object.
Chemical formula
The atoms (letters and numbers) that make up a molecule.
Chemical structure
The specific way that atoms are arranged
Crystal
Structure of atoms or molecules in a 3D pattern.
Polymer
Structure of molecules in a repeating pattern.
Extended structure
A molecule whose atoms occur in a constant ratio and repeating pattern.
Ratio
A quantity relationship between 2 things.
Ratio
A quantity relationship between 2 things.
Glucose and fructose both have an atomic composition of C6H12O2 but they are different molecules. What is the major difference between them?
The structure
List 2 differences between crystals and polymers.
The arrangement of the molecules and an element is made of one type of atom.
C3H4 has how many elements? Atoms?
Carbon has three and hydrogen has four.
What is an element?
A type of atom.
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of matter that has the properties of an element.
What is a molecule?
Something made of tiny atoms, it is in all things.
When making molecule models what do the beads represent? The sticks?
The sticks represent bonds, the beads represent atoms.
Can you have 2 different crystals that are made of the same atom? Give an example. How is it the same? How is it different?
Yes! An example is diamond and graphite. Both are made of carbon atoms, but they are arranged differently.
